The Art of Nouveau pearl
St. Matthew’s Church, located in Vasastaden, Stockholm, is a significant cultural monument. Designed in the Art Nouveau style by architect Erik Lallerstedt, the church complements the surrounding stone architecture. The western facade, which faces Dalagatan, is adorned with smooth-hewn limestone and features rich decorative elements. The main portal above the stairs is also crafted from intricately carved limestone.
From 2017 to 2020, a major restoration project was undertaken to preserve the church’s facade and tower. This comprehensive effort included everything from replacing smaller stone elements to adding new sculptural decorations, all requiring exceptional craftsmanship. Borghamns Stenförädling served as both the stone supplier and the manufacturer of the finished sculptures, which were assembled on-site. This restoration allowed modern craftsmanship to leave a unique mark on the church, blending contemporary techniques with historic preservation.
