Restoration

Natural stone as an environmentally friendly
building material

Borghamns Stenförädling AB is one of the few companies in Sweden that specializes in restoring buildings and decorative elements. Our skilled master stonemasons have successfully completed several restoration projects, including limestone details at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, windows at Linköping Cathedral, and arches in Alvastra Monastery.

We restore Sweden’s beautiful buildings

In Sweden, we have many beautiful historical buildings. One notable example is Linköping Cathedral, which features stunning decorations, from detailed windows to intricate flooring. In the past, craftsmen used hand drills to extract limestone, but they often couldn’t choose the best stones suited for outdoor elements—known as core stones. Instead, they had to work with whatever stone was readily available, even if it wasn’t ideal.

Unfortunately, weather, wind, and air pollution have necessitated the restoration of these structures today. If the builders had been able to use core stones, as is common practice now, the buildings would have been much more durable over time.

Master’s degree in stone carving

The Master’s Certificate in Stonemasonry is a prestigious qualification in the craft profession that demands a high level of skill, experience, and theoretical knowledge. Earning this certificate signifies that an individual meets the stringent requirements set by the professional board regarding material processing, historical styles and techniques, as well as safety and sustainability. In the field of stonemasonry, it serves as proof that the craftsman has achieved a master-level of expertise and is qualified to uphold the professional tradition.

At Borghamns Stenförädling AB, we take pride in having two master stonemasons and one journeyman stonemason on our team, ensuring our products are of the highest artisanal quality. With over a century of experience in quarrying and processing Swedish natural stone such as Kolmården Marble and Borghamn limestone, we blend traditional craftsmanship with modern, sustainable production methods. Our team guarantees that every project, whether it involves floor tiles, window sills, or custom stone details for historical restorations, is executed with the utmost precision and respect for the material’s properties.
