Limestone or marble as floor and wall material

Natural stone is an exceptional material known for its attractive appearance, durability, and ease of cleaning. It can withstand heavy wear and tear, and as it ages, the stone develops a patina that enhances its beauty. Additionally, the color variations of natural materials remain timeless.

Borghamn limestone has been a popular choice for flooring and wall coverings in schools and military facilities due to its density, which provides exceptional wear resistance. This characteristic also makes the floor easy to clean, and with the right surface treatment, it remains non-slip even when wet. Our limestone is available in two colors—light gray and gray-brown—offering creative opportunities to design unique environments in hallways, kitchens, living areas, and other spaces.

Kolmården Marble is another excellent flooring option for hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms. Its beautiful green veining creates an exclusive look while also providing a durable, long-lasting surface. The stone is water-resistant, and when treated correctly, it results in an easy-to-maintain floor.

Another advantage of natural stone is its compatibility with underfloor heating systems.

Formats for floor and wall tiles

Thickness

Borghamn limestone floor tiles typically measure 12 mm in thickness, while Kolmården Marble floor tiles are generally
10 mm thick. Thicker tiles are also available upon request.

Falling lengths

Falling lengths are the most common format for natural stone floor and wall tiles. In this format, the width remains constant—typically 200 mm—while the tile length varies. This design creates a stunning effect, highlighting the natural variations in the stone elegantly.

Cut-to-size tiles

If you’re looking for a more classic appearance for your floors or walls, you can choose square tiles or tiles cut to specific sizes. The most common dimensions are 200 × 200 mm or 300 × 300 mm.

Care instructions for floor and wall tiles

Natural stone floors are known for their durability, but they require regular maintenance and cleaning to keep them in optimal condition. For polished floors, it is recommended to use special stone soap or natural soap. If the floor tiles are made of planed limestone or marble, annual impregnation is advised to prevent the stone surface from darkening over time. For daily cleaning, simply wipe the surface with water and natural soap to maintain its shine.

With the proper surface treatment, our stone varieties resist both moisture and high temperatures, but you should still show your countertop a little care. Use a cutting board when you slice and chop, and do not place a pot or pan directly on the counter if the bottom may carry traces of oil or other substances that could stain the stone. Make sure the cloth you wipe with is free of dirt, which could otherwise scratch the stone. Also, be careful with things that contain acids, such as fruit juice, wine, and cleaning agents with low pH, as well as with carbonated drinks and salty spills. Make it a habit to wipe the counter with a damp cloth (water only!) immediately after a spill to avoid marks. It’s good to know that the effect of acidic or salty spills on your stone is only cosmetic. The stone’s durability is unaffected. When cleaning your countertop, use only cleaning agents suitable for limestone or marble. For everyday cleaning, a damp cloth is usually enough; for slightly tougher dirt, a small amount of natural soap is best. It cleans gently, while also preserving the stone’s surface.

Falling lengths are a classic format for natural stone tiles, characterized by a constant width and varying lengths. The most common widths are either 200 mm or 300 mm, with lengths ranging from 1.5 to 3 times the width. For example, a floor featuring 200 mm wide tiles in this ‘falling lengths’ style would have tile dimensions ranging from 200×300 mm to 200×600 mm.

This approach produces a harmonious variation that highlights the stone’s natural color variations.

We generally recommend a honed surface finish for natural stone floors. However, this advice may vary depending on the specific location where you plan to install the stone. As a general guideline, avoid surfaces that are too finely honed or polished, as they can be perceived as slippery and may be more prone to scratches. If you have any questions or need help, please don’t hesitate to contact us, and we will help you create a unique floor tailored to your needs.

Absolutely, underfloor heating together with natural stone is an excellent combination. The stone’s properties distribute the underfloor heating evenly and retain the heat well.

For limestone, the minimum thickness is 12 mm, while for Kolmården marble, it is 10 mm. For larger tile formats, increasing the thickness may be necessary to ensure the stone’s strength is maintained.
